Translational Cardiometabolic Genomic Medicine

Annabelle Rodriguez-Oquendo
>Translational Cardiometabolic Genomic Medicine, edited by Dr. Annabelle Rodriguez-Oquendo, is an important resource to postgraduate (medical, dental and graduate) students, postdoctoral fellows, basic scientists and physician scientists seeking to understand and expand their knowledge base in the field of genomic medicine as it is applied to cardiometabolic diseases. This handbook integrates cutting edge experimental approaches, such as chromatin immunoprecipitation paired end tagging (CHIA-PET), to population studies such as the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. It encompasses a range of book chapters that highlight bioinformatic approaches to better understanding functionality of the noncoding regions of the human genome to the use of molecular diagnostic testing in predicting increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Where applicable, this reference also includes chapters related to therapeutic options specifically aligned to molecular targets.
Provides comprehensive research on translational genomic medicine Explains state-of-the-art genome editing for stem cells and mouse models with significant relevance to human cardiometabolic disease.Includes discussions on the functional effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms and cardiometabolic diseases, stratified by sex and race.

Social Cognition and Metacognition in Schizophrenia : Psychopathology and Treatment Approaches

Paul Lysaker; Giancarlo Dimaggio; Martin Brüne

Deficits in social cognition and metacognition in schizophrenics makes it difficult for them to understand the speech, facial expressions and hence emotion and intention of others, as well as allowing little insight into their own mental state. These deficits are associated with poor social skills, fewer social relationships, and are predictive of poorer performance in a work setting. Social Cognition and Metacognition in Schizophrenia reviews recent research advances focusing on the precise nature of these deficits, when and how they manifest themselves, what their effect is on the course of schizophrenia, and how each can be treated. These deficits may themselves be why schizophrenia is so difficult to resolve; by focusing on the deficits, recovery may be quicker and long lasting.

This book discusses such deficits in early onset, first episode, and prolonged schizophrenia; how the deficits relate to each other and to other forms of psychopathology; how the deficits affect social, psychological, and vocational functioning; and how best to treat the deficits in either individual or group settings.

Summarizes the types of social cognitive and metacognitive deficits present in schizophrenia Discusses how deficits are related to each other and to other forms of psychopathology Describes how deficits impact function and affect the recovery process Provides treatment approaches for these deficits

Clinical Applications for Next-Generation Sequencing

Urszula Demkow; Rafal Ploski
>”

Clinical Applications for Next Generation Sequencing” provides readers with an outstanding postgraduate resource to learn about the translational use of NGS in clinical environments.

Rooted in both medical genetics and clinical medicine, the book fills the gap between state-of-the-art technology and evidence-based practice, providing an educational opportunity for users to advance patient care by transferring NGS to the needs of real-world patients.

The book builds an interface between genetic laboratory staff and clinical health workers to not only improve communication, but also strengthen cooperation. Users will find valuable tactics they can use to build a systematic framework for understanding the role of NGS testing in both common and rare diseases and conditions, from prenatal care, like chromosomal abnormalities, up to advanced age problems like dementia.
Fills the gap between state-of-the-art technology and evidence-based practiceProvides an educational opportunity which advances patient care through the transfer of NGS to real-world patient assessmentPromotes a practical tool that clinicians can apply directly to patient careIncludes a systematic framework for understanding the role of NGS testing in many common and rare diseases Presents evidence regarding the important role of NGS in current diagnostic strategies
